Positron Emission Tomography fused with Computed Tomography (PET-CT) is one of the most sensitive imaging technologies available in modern oncology. Before the scan, a small, safe injection of a radiolabeled glucose molecule (18F-FDG) is given. Because cancer cells metabolize glucose much faster than surrounding normal tissue, they absorb more FDG and appear as bright 'hot spots' on the 3D computerized image. 1. Determines whether the cancer is confined to its primary location or has spread to distant lymph nodes or distant organs. 2. Helps radiation oncologists delineate active, viable tumor tissue from inactive scar tissue, ensuring accurate target contouring. 3. Assesses whether active cancer cells remain after completing chemotherapy or radiation cycles. 4. Differentiates post-treatment fibrosis or scar tissue from true disease recurrence.
