Understanding Chemotherapy Cycles, Infusions, and Blood Count Monitoring

Chemotherapy uses systemic anti-cancer medications that circulate throughout the bloodstream to destroy rapidly dividing tumor cells. Understanding why treatment is given in timed cycles helps patients plan their daily routines confidently. A cycle consists of a treatment day (or several consecutive treatment days) followed by a designated rest period (typically 2 to 3 weeks). This planned rest period gives healthy body tissues—especially bone marrow, stomach lining, and hair follicles—time to regenerate. Before every new chemotherapy cycle, a complete blood count (CBC) is performed to ensure the bone marrow has recovered sufficiently: • Indicates red blood cell levels that carry oxygen throughout the body. • Measures specialized white blood cells that fight bacterial infections. • Essential for normal blood clotting. If white blood cell counts are temporarily low, Dr. Rathore may prescribe growth factor injections (G-CSF) or briefly adjust the cycle date to protect patient safety.
