Radiation therapy (radiotherapy) is one of the most widely used and effective modalities in modern cancer treatment. It uses carefully controlled, high-energy beams to damage the DNA within cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing. Cancer cells divide much more rapidly than normal cells and have a reduced ability to repair cellular damage. Radiation targets these vulnerable cells while advanced computerized planning techniques shield nearby healthy tissues as much as possible. 1. Delivered from outside the body using machines like linear accelerators. The patient lies comfortably on a treatment couch while the beam is aimed precisely at the target region. 2. A radioactive source is placed temporarily inside or immediately adjacent to the tumor site, common in gynecological malignancies. Before starting treatment, patients undergo a simulation scan (CT simulation) to pinpoint the exact treatment area. Daily treatment sessions are painless and typically take only 15 to 20 minutes, allowing most patients to return to their routine activities. Side effects are localized to the area being treated. For example, radiation to the chest or throat may cause mild swallowing discomfort, while radiation to the skin may cause temporary redness or dryness. Modern supportive care medications and dietary adjustments help manage these symptoms effectively.
